All you need not to know about stall bars

Stall bars, resemble a wide ladder, typically about three feet wide, eight feet tall, mounted to a wall. These are considered as the best tools for developing strength and flexibility. Today, due to the growth of health conscious people, the appreciation for stall bars has renewed.

A peek at history

In the late 1700s, Johann Guts Muths, the grandfather of modern gymnastics, built a 20-foot high wooden frame meant for outdoors climbing. After that, Frederick Ludvig Jahn, a younger contemporary of Guts Muths, copied the wooden climbing frame and enlarged it, and then exercises were developed for the equipment.

Exercises using stall bars

  • 1- Simply hanging from the stall bars. It strengthens the spine.
  • 2- You can use it to stretch the back muscles. Just face it, and stand around three to four feet away. Bend forward with straight legs and back and arms straight out in front of you. Hold the bars to keep your balance. Lower your back until it is horizontal. Keep your legs straight.  Move your feet towards it, until the center of gravity wants to pull your body from the bar. Continue doing this as far as you can, while keeping your feet firmly to the floor without slipping. This will stretch your back.
  • 3- Leg lift is another exercise you can do using the equipment. Hang from it, facing out with palms out, while grabbing a bar. Ensure your toes do not touch the floor. Bend the legs to the hips, keep the legs straight and lift them to horizontal. Remain static and hold for 10 seconds. You can do it for one or both the legs. It will strengthen your back, legs and abdomen.
  • 4- Sit on the floor with your back against the bar. Move your lower back four to five inches away. Now lean your shoulders against the stall bar and try and reach behind. Grab the bar and perform a leg lift. Your legs should not be three to five inches above the floor.
  • 5- Hang facing the stall bars, lift your lower legs at knees to hold. Do it repetitively, holding for a few seconds. It strengthens the legs and knees.
